Programmer Profile: The Mich Vish Interracial Morning Show

This show mixes it up in more ways than one

Unusual pairings often make for interesting and unusual outcomes. Michelle Lobkowicz and Vish Khanna were music fans who fell in love and, despite very different cultural backgrounds, got married. Twice, in fact: once in a Catholic ceremony and then again in a traditional Hindu ceremony. Out of this was born The Mich Vish Interracial Morning Show on Guelph’s CFRU 93.9FM. As Vish says, “we love music and we love talking and we love each other.”

Both Michelle and Vish are actively involved in the music community in Guelph. Vish is a musician, a music writer and is the Music Programming Coordinator at CFRU. Michelle, meanwhile is current President of the Guelph Jazz Festival. Starting a radio show allowed them to share their love of music with each other and their listeners. “We generally play any music we feel like with an we love music and we love talking and we love each other appropriate emphasis on new, local, and Canadian music.”

A lot of effort goes into The Mich Vish Interracial Morning Show. Each week they have a feature artist interview or profile and provide comprehensive events listings for Guelph and Kitchener-Waterloo. They have talked to an impressive and eclectic array of Canadian and international artists since the show started in 2005. Just a brief sampling of some of their guests includes Ian MacKaye, Steve Albini, Arcade Fire, Joel Plaskett, Ron Sexsmith, Patti Smith, Wooden Stars, Sarah Harmer, Gentleman Reg and on and on. “We love entertaining people and hopefully informing them about popular cultural phenomena,” says Vish.
