Programmer Profile : The Rib : Experimental Music

As a musician, composer, student and DJ, Robyn Jacob makes experimental music the centre of her life.

By Magnus Thyvold

"Music inspired me to do the show. And also the chance to get people to listen to new and progressive music that is often difficult and obscure." When you are into avant-garde and experimental music, it is hard to get most people to understand and appreciate the music you love. Having a radio show that lets you reach out to those fellow enthusiasts sure helps.

"Weird stuff is definitely in," says Robyn Jacob, host of The Rib on Vancouver's CiTR 101.9FM. "The ideas in a lot of this music are highly conceptual, and I like it when the music pushes boundaries, but at the same time has a good sound to it." Each program includes an in-depth feature on a special album, usually something new and Canadian, and lots of attention for Vancouve's vibrant experimental scene. Recent favourite releases include New Code by the Peggy Lee Band (#1 this month on our jazz chart), Absolute Value of Noise (Peter Courtemanche) and Bird Show.

Robyn brings more than just enthusiasm to the table. She is studying music at UBC and composing and improvising with Vancouver collective The Dekumpozers. A new passion is the Theramin which she is currently trying to master. "I am trying to work my skill at that, and hopefully to do performances with it some day." Another project on the go is "a conceptual piece for a women's choir that deals with the issues surrounding the fake orgasm." If nothing else, throwing in some sex is one way to get people's attention.

You can catch Robyn and The Rib on CITR 101.9FM in Vancouver on Mondays from 4 P.M. to 5 P.M. PT or by podcast anytime at www.citr.ca. (podcast page)
