Greg MacPherson ( http://gregmacpherson.com/ @GregoryDMacP )

Maintenance
G7 Welcoming Committee ( )
I have often heard many people refer to this Winnipeg singer-songwriter’s music as leftie-folk, and that may very well be the case, but beyond all that ga-ga-ga the solo performances on the MAINTENANCE EP are excellent bare-bones songs and sincere music. Greg Macpherson’s lyrics are poignant, visually striking and politically conscious, and they are sung by a voice that is well-worn, genuine and overwhelmingly convincing. The opening lines of the working class no frills acoustic ditty “Wide Turn: “I never figured us to get so far / all feeling / no skin / we had a long run of bad luck / bad scenery / and the worst three seasons this towns ever seen, hits home, comes to life and leaps out of the radio upon first listen. The black and white nostalgic image reel immediately comes to life in the mind’s eye when you hear this music. Macpherson is a powerful storyteller who can strike the right chord and the right sentiment with the right choice of words. Track #2 - is an apt cover of the Clash’s “Bank Robber. And the rest of the songs on this EP don’t waste a single word describing the irrelevant, the intangible or the abstract. The meaning in the lyrics on this recording are close to the surface and they cut straight to the bone. No fluff. No flimsy. Track #4 - “Company Store is a perfect example of Macpherson’s style, as the singer-songwriter-performer recites, “slammed the door at a quarter to four / I was heading for the company store / why should my children starve no more / tonight I am going to feed them / I haven’t worked in forty days / for twenty three I’ve had no pay / In a week I will have no place to stay / in an hour they will have to kill me. The song is a Macpherson live favourite and a true story about his grandfather who used to work the mines in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia. An exceptional EP.
