Formed in 2004, Toronto's Tusks have been a bit quiet as of late. Mind you, their music is a bit quiet, so this is understandable. Their first release since 2008 shows that they are in great form, displaying a strong jangly indie pop sound mixed with 80s pub rock and new wave. Frontman Samir Khan gathered the band together after a bout of writer's block, adding Shaw-ham Liem (The Sea Snakes), Steven McKay (Bruce Peninsula) and Jordan Howard (The Acorn, Cuff the Duke) to the project. Total Entertainment is a bit of a slow grower that adds layers of stripped-down pop to fuzzed out guitars and delicate melodies. It takes a few listens to fully realize itself, but when it does, it is a very satisfying experience. In particular, the leadoff track “Little Pirouettes,” is a very good track. The song has a layered, melodic pop style that sets the tone for the rest of the album. The twitchy “In the Beginning/Give it Time” might remind listeners of 80s pop gems like Squeeze and Split Enz. This is a solid release and a great addition to the Canadian indie rock canon.
